Message: Fantastic site with great information! Hello, I am researching my school's war memorial, ****burn High School, Leeds, and your site has given me invaluable information about one of our former pupils, Jack Barker. Would it be possible to copy the photo you have of the Uredd to put alongside our memorial? My email is nevgill68@yahoo.co.uk, thank you.

I have been searching the web to try to find out more and came across your wonderful site. I was particularly trying to find out more about Ula's history and her unique version of the Jolly Roger! Thank you! Your site has answered many questions and do****ents an important piece of history.

Message: It was excellent to meet you at the Memorial to Honour the fallen "still on patrol" in Dundee on 17th September 2009. My father, Herman Eilertsen also served on the Ula and was able to attend the ceremony. It's great that future generations of Dundonians and visitors will be able to see the memorial and understand the sacrifice that was made here during the Second World War.

Message: Thank you for an interesting site- my grandfather, Gunnar Heitmann, sailed with Ula. He was married to a british girl from Skegness and my father was born in Dundee in october of 1945. I am trying to recover my grandfather's history, taking as a starting point the bits and pieces he told me when he was still alive. Like many warsailors he did not talk to much of his experiences in WW2. I am happy to receive any kind of information on my grandfather, I am especially courious about how he ended up in Scotland. He fled from M/S Bosphourus at port in Algeria the 31. of July 1941 using a stolen fishing vessel and as far as I can remember, he missed Gibraltar and landed in Spain. From there to Scotland I am pretty much unsure about his wereabouts. I am also curious to know what kind of man he was at this time- I only recall him through the eyes of a child and an adolecent...I can be reached at

Message: P:S I would like to make a correction... My dad was with Uredd when the accident happened. He was also with the Ula submarine. I was just looking at the picture earlier on. If you happen to have the picture which shows some crewmen holding ``the barmaid`s knickers´´ from the Queen`s hotel in Dundee, my father was one of the men sitting behind the guys holding ``the trophy flag´´. He has his hat on.

Comment : Message: Hi Ivar, My daughter who lives in Australia mentioned your recent communication with her regarding my father, Olav Eikenes. He was one of the crew members on Ula submarine. My father`s story was quiet extraordinary because he was not on board when the submarine was sunk due to a mishap during a blackout in Dundee - he was hit by a bus! That meant he had to stay while his submarine sailed. I guess you could call it irony of situation as his being hit by a bus actually saved his life.! He died 20 years ago.

My father was very proud to be a part of the Ula submarine crew. I have photographs of him on Ula and still keep most of his war memorabilia. It`s nice to be able to get in touch with you and look back to the proud moments of our fathers. Greetings!
